Thought Works

What's going on?

So, you don’t know what’s happening here? Or you’re claiming to get everything, except for “that one thing”?1
Let’s start from the center, close to the top.
That’s a drill, which is connected to and turning a car transmission. That then goes to a car differential, which splits two ways. I’ll start with the top side. It leads into 90° gears, which connect to a fan. The fan blows air into a wind turbine, which generates electricity, and is connected with wires to a speaker. The noise from that goes to a microphone, which then powers an electric stovetop.2
Let’s pause there, and go back to the differential. Its lower side is connected to a water pump, which draws water from a barrel and sends it down a pipe. That pipe pours the water onto the stovetop. The water boils, turns to steam, and the rising steam turns a powerplant turbine, which then rotates a generator. That’s hooked up with wires to a transformer, and then to a circuit board.3 Finally, the board is connected into the battery of the drill. Yes, the battery. Technically, I could’ve just made it a corded drill, but then I wouldn’t be able to reference this awesome video.

Why did I make this?
I was trying to come up with something to post.4

When I’m brainstorming, I tend to visualize mechanical works in my head, grinding and chugging along.
This time, it took the form of many gears and motors linked together, all straining against each other.

Idea! Why don’t I draw that “thought works”?

And then this came out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“Wow, so deep and inspirational!”

Welcome to the real world, kid.

Life ain’t all sunshiny roses5. It’s filled with terrible ideas, late nights, bleary eyes, and coffee.

  1. I don’t blame you, but I also do.

  2. Everything here is bad, but this part is probably the worst. How many watts, exactly, can you get out of a microphone?

  3. My terrible representation of a rectifier. And yes, I know that technically I need a phase converter as well. If you knew that, I’m honored to be graced by your presence.

  4. My original idea was to draw a stickman working at his computer, with bags under his eyes.

  5. Yes. Sunshiny roses. Fight me.
Take your best shot in the comments.

  6. If you were wondering what counts as a blogcomic, this is it.

  7. I need more of those.
